August 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Canal Era Music Workshop
Step into the world of the Wabash & Erie Canal through the power of music! This hands-on workshop explores the vital role music played during the Canal Era, connecting participants to the stories and spirit of our Pioneer ancestors. The best part: thanks to generous grant support, this event is free to all and open to the public!
What to Expect
Participants will learn the building blocks of lyric writing and collaborate to compose an original verse set to the melody of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” — a song that, in the version we know today, was written during this era. The workshop’s theme, How Our Pioneer Ancestors Inspire Us, will guide reflection on the heroic qualities that have been passed down to us.
Why It Matters
As home to the only remaining navigable segment of the Wabash & Erie Canal in Indiana, Canal Park has a unique mission to preserve and celebrate this history. This workshop marks a first-ever opportunity in our 50-year history to explore Canal Era music as a living vehicle for local history education — leaving participants with a deeper sense of community pride and belonging.
Looking Ahead
The group’s original song will serve as the grand finale of the August 15 performance, where the full audience will join in singing together. It’s a celebration you’ll help create!
Participants can also expect Q&A sessions following each event, and all attendees will be invited to complete a feedback survey for a chance to win Canal Park merchandise and Of Thee I Sing branded items.
This program is made possible in part by The Arts Federation, and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.
