DESCRIPTION:Description: Students will learn to prepare wool yarn for dyeing using mordants.  They will learn different dyeing techniques in Colonial America and across the world.  Students will take home their own hand dyed skeins of wool yarn.  Students should wear old clothes and/or bring an apron. \n \nWhen: Saturday June 21\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. Beth spins Suri Alpaca fiber\, which she has won awards with her hand spun yarn.  Yarn will be used in the dyeing process. \nCost: $63.00. This cost covers registration and all necessary materials. \nSkill Level: Beginner. Age limit 12-14 years old\, depending on attention span as this is a long class. \nClass size: Minimum 2\, maximum 6 students. \nLocation:  Wabash & Erie Canal Park\, Speece Picnic Shelter. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn the basics of cutting fabric pieces\, sewing those pieces back together to form a block\, putting a border on the block\, putting three layers of a quilt together\, and quilting those three layers\, then putting together a small pillow.  OR make an 1850’s sunbonnet with quilted brim. \n \n \nWhen: Saturday June 14\, 9:00AM – 5:00PM (bring your own lunch). \nInstructor: Becky Crabb. Becky was inspired to quilt as a child while watching her grandmothers quilt.  After teaching herself the basics\, she joined a group of older women quilters in Florida in the early 1970s.  She taught basic hand quilting in adult education many years as well as occasional classes at libraries and quilt stores. \nCost: $72.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: This class is designed for those students who have taken the Beginning Spinning Class or have some previous experience in spinning.  Students will learn to draft the wool fiber and spin it into yarn using the traditional spinning wheel.  Students may bring their own spinning wheel. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, June 14\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. Beth fell in love with spinning 8 years ago learning to spin from a friend.  After spinning Suri Alpaca fiber and loving it\, Beth now breeds Suri Alpacas.  She demonstrates spinning and weaving at several reenactments\, including Feast of Hunter’s Moon\, Colonial Market Days & Kohkohmah.  In 2022 & 2023\, Beth’s hand spun yarn won Judge’s Choice award at Suri Network National Fleece Show. \nCost: $63.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn a historic skill to make a wooden bucket using historic tools and methods.  Learn what old tools are still available today and make some that aren’t.  Students should feel comfortable using hand tools and will be learning to make staves\, bottom\, hoops and rope handles.  This is a two-day class. \n \nWhen: Friday and Saturday\, May 30-31\, 9:00AM – 5:00PM (bring your own lunch for each day). \nInstructor: Peter Cooper.  Peter has been coopering since 1997.  He has taught coopering to over 500 students\, and made coopered products for National historic sites\, national parks and theme parks in the US and Canada. \nCost: $255.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: Students will learn to draft wool fiber and spin it into yarn using a drop spindle.  The end of the class will be an introduction to using the spinning wheel.  Drop spindle and extra wool will be sent home for continued practice. \n \nWhen: Saturday May 24\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. Beth fell in love with spinning 8 years ago\, learning to spin from a friend.  After spinning Suri Alpaca fiber and loving it\, Beth now breeds Suri Alpacas.  She demonstrates spinning and weaving at several reenactments\, including Feast of Hunters’ Moon\, Colonial Market Days\, and Kohkohmah.  In 2022 & 2023\, Beth’s hand spun yarn won Judge’s Choice award at Suri Network National Fleece Show. \nCost: $63.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn weaving by making either 4 coasters or 2 coasters and a small runner on a rigid heddle loom.  Finish projects with a hemstitch. \n \nWhen: Saturday May 17\, 10:00AM – 3:00PM (bring your own lunch). \nInstructors: Instructors are members of Weaving Guild.  The Weaving Guild has existed for 40 years.  Jan Young\, wove hot pads as a child in 4-H\, taught elementary school for 40 years\, and now not only weaves cloth but also weaves stories at Feast of the Hunter’s Moon (since 1977).  Vilija Deutschman is a long-time weaver who also loves the history and heritage of this craft.  Sue Hodge\, a retired accountant\, who has lived in Carroll County for 43 years\, and has been weaving for 8 years.  She also enjoys knitting and quilting. Susan Smith is a retired math teacher and has been weaving for 9 years. She enjoys mixing fibers and colors to create woven items for her home and wardrobe and is looking forward to sharing the joys of weaving in the class. \nCost: $38.00. This cost covers registration and all necessary materials. \nSkill Level: Beginner\, age 10 or older. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn a historic skill to make a Shaving Horse and low work bench using historic and modern tools and methods.  Learn what different styles of shaving horses were once used and make a convertible base that will accept the different types.  Students will be able to pick one design that fits on the convertible base that will best fit their use.  Examples of some of the heads available are shown below.  Students should feel comfortable using hand tools. \n \nWhen: Saturday May 17\, 9:00AM – 5:00PM (bring your own lunch). \nInstructor: Peter Cooper.  Peter has been Green Woodworking and coopering since 1997.  He has taught coopering to over 500 students\, and made coopered products for National historic sites\, national parks and theme parks in the US and Canada. \nCost: $183.00. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Interpretive Center at Wabash & Erie Canal Park in Delphi for an exploration of springtime treasures along our newest trail: the Woodpecker Trail!\nThe group walk will be led by David McCain\, and the walking route will begin at the Interpretive Center\, heading north towards Founders Point. The group will see a variety of wildflowers and plants\, a sign of spring’s arrival! The total walking distance will be approximately 1.25 miles on mostly flat paths of crushed stone. The Woodpecker Trail (about 0.1 mile loop) includes some stairs and inclines.\nCome celebrate our newest trail\, established thanks to the efforts of local volunteers and AmeriCorps!
