DESCRIPTION:Description: NEW RECIPES – Learn how to build a fire in a hearth\, about tools and utensils and pans used in hearth cooking\, safety\, learn boiling using a crane (to make a chowder)\, frying using a trivet (to make either fry bread or a fried biscuit)\, and baking using a dutch oven (to make plain cake and then ice it).  If time\, we’ll try using the corn pone pan to make corn dodgers.  We will also make an extract.  We’ll talk about coffee flavorings using your extracts.  It is helpful for participants to wear a sturdy apron.  This is a one-day class. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, October 26\, 9:00AM – 3:00PM\, with a one hour lunch break (bring your own lunch). \nInstructor: Becky Crabb.  Becky has been doing historic cooking for over 30 years.  She has worked in living history for 40 years and has collected historic recipes\, including old family recipes\, all her life. \nCost: $72.00. Beth Cripe fell in love with spinning 8 years ago learning to spin from a friend.  After spinning Suri Alpaca fiber and loving it\, Beth now breeds Suri Alpacas.  She demonstrates spinning and weaving at several reenactments\, including Feast of Hunter’s Moon\, Colonial Market Days\, and Kohkohmah.  In 2022 and 2023\, Beth’s hand spun yarn won Judge’s Choice award at Suri Network National Fleece Show. \nCost: $63.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn to make a whisk broom. Try your hand at traditional Appalachian broom making using a tying box (miniature winder).  In this class we will explore options for whisk brooms. First timers will make turkey wing\, hawks’ tail\, hen’s wing.  Part 2\, for those who have done the prior\, will have the option of doubles\, X’s\, and emphasis on plaiting.  Choice of plaiting and cord colors. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, August 31\, 9:00AM – 1:00PM \nInstructor: Bev Larson. SUMMARY:Hand Quilting Class
DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn the basics of cutting fabric pieces\, sewing those pieces back together to form a block\, putting a border on the block\, putting three layers of a quilt together\, and quilting those three layers\, then putting together a small pillow. OR you can make an 1850’s sunbonnet with quilted brim. You pick your creation\, and you take it home with you! \n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to bring fabric scissors\, a heavy thimble that fits the middle finger\, and a pencil. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 1\, 9AM-5PM with a one hour lunch break \n\n\n\nInstructor: Becky Crabb. Becky was inspired to quilt as a child while watching her grandmothers quilt.  After teaching herself the basics\, she joined a group of older women quilters in Florida in the early 1970s.  She taught basic hand quilting in adult education many years as well as occasional classes at libraries and quilt stores. \n\n\n\n\n\nSkill Level: Beginner. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn a historic skill to make a wooden bucket using historic tools and methods.  Learn what old tools are still available today and make some that aren’t.  Students should feel comfortable using hand tools and will be learning to make staves\, bottom hoops and rope handles.  This a 2-day class.  Students will each take home the bucket that they make under the supervision of an expert instructor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Friday (May 17) 9AM-5PM\, Saturday (May 18) 9AM-5PM\, with a one hour lunch break each day \n\n\n\nInstructor: Peter Cooper. Peter has been coopering since 1997.  He has taught coopering to over 500 students\, and made coopered products for national historic sites\, national parks and theme parks in the US and Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nSkill Level: Beginner (students ages 14-18 are allowed if accompanied by an adult) \n\n\n\nClass Size: minimum 2 students\, maximum 5 students \n\n\n\nLocation: The Cooper Shop in the Canal Park Pioneer Village \n\n\n\nTerms and Conditions: \n\n\n\n\nRegistration and payment are required at least two weeks prior to the class dates.\n\n\n\nAll classes require pre-registration and pre-payment.\n\n\n\nTo reserve your spot and pre-pay by check\, please mail a check to Canal Park\, attn: Classes\, 1030 N. Washington Street\, Delphi\, IN 46923. Please identify your desired class(es) in the check’s memo. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn weaving on a 4-harness and/or union loom and braiding scissor finders.  Take home a few mug rugs\, and one or two scissor finders.  This is a one-day class. Participants are asked to bring a pencil\, a notebook\, scissors\, and a comb. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, May 5\, 9AM-4PM with a one hour lunch break \n\n\n\nInstructor: Ryoko Marti. Ryoko has been weaving 20 years and is a member of the Wabash Weavers Guild. The Weavers Guild has existed for 40 years.
