SUMMARY:Dyeing - Fall 2025
DESCRIPTION:Description: Students will learn to prepare wool yarn for dyeing using mordants.  They will learn different dyeing techniques in Colonial America and across the world.  Students will take home their own hand dyed skeins of wool yarn.  Students should wear old clothes and bring an apron. The Traditional Natural Dyeing Class will be held outside using extension cords and crock pots. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, September 20\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. Beth spins Suri Alpaca fiber\, which she has won awards with her hand spun yarn.  Yarn will be used in the dyeing process. \nCost: $63.00. This cost covers registration and all necessary materials. \nSkill Level: No previous experience needed. Students must be at least 12 years old and able to fully focus and participate throughout the class duration. \nClass size: Minimum 2\, maximum 6 students. \nLocation:  Wabash & Erie Canal Park\, Speece Picnic Shelter. Susan Smith is a retired math teacher and has been weaving for 9 years. She enjoys mixing fibers and colors to create woven items for her home and wardrobe and is looking forward to sharing the joys of weaving in the class. \nCost: $38.00. DESCRIPTION:Description: Indigo was used for more than 6\,000 years across the world and in Colonial America.  Some plantations grew Indigo during the Colonial period. Students will learn to prepare wool yarn for dyeing.  They will learn to prepare the indigo dye bath and dye the wool yarn.  The Indigo dyeing technique is completely different than any other dyeing technique.   Students should wear old clothes and/or bring an apron. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, May 2\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. DESCRIPTION:Description: This class is designed for those students who would like to learn the basics of spinning fiber into yarn.  Students will learn to draft the wool fiber and spin it into yarn using a drop spindle.  Near the end of the class\, the students will get to try spinning on a traditional spinning wheel. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, May 23\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. Beth Cripe fell in love with spinning 8 years ago learning to spin from a friend.  After spinning Suri Alpaca fiber and loving it\, Beth now breeds Suri Alpacas.  She demonstrates spinning and weaving at several reenactments\, including Feast of Hunter’s Moon\, Colonial Market Days & Kohkohmah.  In 2022 & 2023\, Beth’s hand spun yarn won Judge’s Choice award at Suri Network National Fleece Show. \nCost: $63.00\, includes all materials and fees. \nSkill Level: Beginner\, age limit 12-14+\, depends on attention span since it is a long class. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn the basics of cutting fabric pieces\, sewing those pieces back together to form a block\, putting a border on the block\, putting three layers of a quilt together\, and quilting those three layers\, then putting together a small pillow\, OR make an 1850’s sunbonnet with quilted brim. \n \n \nWhen: Saturday\, May 30\, 9:00AM – 5:00PM\, with 1 hour lunch (bring your own lunch). \nInstructor: Becky Crabb. Becky was inspired to quilt as a child while watching her grandmothers quilt.  After teaching herself the basics\, she joined a group of older women quilters in Florida in the early 1970s.  She taught basic hand quilting in adult education many years as well as occasional classes at libraries and quilt stores. \nCost: $72.00\, includes all fees and materials. DESCRIPTION:Description: This class is designed for those students who have taken the Beginning Spinning Class or have some previous experience in spinning.  Students will learn to draft the wool fiber and spin it into yarn using the traditional spinning wheel.  Students may bring their own spinning wheel.  Students may try on e-spinner. \n \nWhen: Saturday\, June 13\, 9:00AM – 12:30PM \nInstructor: Beth Cripe. DESCRIPTION:Description: Learn a historic skill to make a wooden one-handled bucket using historic tools and methods.  Learn what old tools are still available today and make some that aren’t.  Students must feel comfortable using hand tools and will be learning to make staves\, bottom\, and hoops.
