Reed Case House

Tours available by appointment.

This grand Federal style house was built in 1844 by Reed Case, contractor for Wabash & Erie Canal construction in Carroll County. After moving to a newer brick home on Main Street, Case maintained this house on Front Street as an inn for canal travelers and workers. The house was donated to the Canal Association by owners Jim and June Davis and was moved to Canal Park in 1986.

Visitors are at once impressed with the “marble” walls of the two-story entry hall, where the original faux marble design has been reproduced onto the plaster walls. Most of the woodwork is original to the house, and many furniture pieces in the master bedroom were from the Reed Case family. Other furnishings include Canal-era pieces like a handsome settee and matching chairs from the 1850s in the formal parlor, and an early 1800s corner cabinet and 1872 square grand piano in the less formal double parlor. Also displayed is a grandfather clock made in Pennsylvania in 1805 and brought to Carroll County in the early 1800s. A children’s bedroom features two rope beds with feather tick mattresses and a collection of early toys.

The Reed Case House is available for 20-30 minute guided tours by appointment only. Tours may also be available during Canal Park festivals throughout the year.
